I have a concert in HD MPEG-2 that is cut into about three pieces and the first piece plays fine and the other two don't play. There is no pattern to the failures though.

It will play some high-def MPEG-2 program streams without error though. However, when playing 90% of my high-def MPEG-2 program streams the PS3 will start and then report "Data corrupted". I can play standard def MPEG-2 programs streams and VOBs just fine now. This was the same for both ushare and MediaTomb. Until I changed the type of my MPEG-2 program streams from "video/m2ps" to "video/mpeg" (edited /usr/local/share/magic.mime and recompiled it) I had the same problem with "Unsupported Format" and would get the message about being unable to connect to the media server. Problems with unsupported media types are almost certainly due to issues with MIME filetype mappings. I've used ushare and MediaTomb on Linux, and Sony VAIO Media Server (came installed on my laptop) as uPNP servers.
Ps3 media server freezes software#
I'm thoroughly unimpressed with this first rev of the software that enables the PS3 to act as a streaming media player. I'm thinking of giving up and using the PS3 as a *egads* game console. (I've enabled UPnP as well as tried setting up a service to 'forward' port 9,000.) If any of you have had luck with this, please let us know what types of video files you've used and whether you had to make any changes to your router settings, etc. I currently have a Buffalo Link Theater media server which works well, but now I have too many devices for my amp to switch! Most of my video files are divx, and I can't seem to find an answer as to whether this flavor of MPEG 4 is supported or not. The same things happen whether I'm wired or wireless.

I'll also made sure that my router is allowing access from/to the PS3. In both cases, I've set the servers to see the proper directories, as well as "allowing" the PS3 to access my network. In the case of Twonky Media, the media server is seen and recognized, but no files are found. When I click on them I get an error about connecting to the media server.
Ps3 media server freezes full#
In the case of WMP 11, my PS3 sees my full media directory structure, but every single video file says "unsupported format". In both cases, my PS3 sees the server(s), but fails in various ways to actually play the files. I've tried both Twonky Media and Microsoft's new media server (with Windows Media Player V11) without luck. I'd love to hear more from people who have had good luck using their PS3 as a media player by accessing their PCs via media server software.
